Micro-Nice D-5 Cooling system descaler and scale preventative chemical
Micro-Nice D-5 is a non-toxic botanical extract used to remove scale and scum from cooling and heating systems. D-5 uses plant extracts to penetrate between existing scale on interior surfaces while preventing new scale from forming. This leads to rock hard deposits where heated water is introduced to these salts. Calcium from hard water also combines with soaps that would normally dissolve in water, which forms scum that precipitates out in a thin film on the interior surfaces of heating and cooling systems. The formation of these deposits can drastically reduce the efficiency of the system. By looking at the graph below, you can see that even a mere 3/32" of scale can decrease the efficiency of the system by 50%!
The typical method of removing this scale and scum is to use acids, such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acids. These acids are applied to the scale-inhabited system in an effort to dissolve and remove the scale. However, the use of acids can actually create additional salts which can turn into further scale. The following is the chemical reaction between calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and hydrochloric acid (HCl): 1 CaCO 3 (s) + 2 HCl (aq) = 1 CaCl 2 (aq) + 1 CO 2 (g) + 1 H 2 O (l) As you can see, the reaction has produced another soluble salt, CaCl 2 (calcium chloride), which increases the potential for further scale formation. Aside from the chemical aspects of using acids as descalers, there is also the health and environmental aspect of using acids. It is commonly known that acids, such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, are extremely corrosive and hazardous to living beings. Their chemical reactivity can prove to be potentially fatal, citing the example of the mixing of hydrochloric acid with common household bleach which will produce toxic chlorine gas. Sulfuric acid has been documented to cause more serious burns to the skin due to it's dehydrating properties. If these acids are released into storm sewers, they can be detrimental to aquatic plant life and animals. The solution: Micro-Nice D-5As opposed to the use of acids, Micro-Nice D-5 uses a physical reaction to reduce the inter-molecular bond between the scale and the surface to which the scale has adhered. Since no acids are being introduced, there is no further development of additional salts. Micro-Nice D-5 reduces the surface tension and static electricity of salts and scum, making existing scale fall of of the system's surfaces while simultaneously preventing new scale from forming. Micro-Nice D-5 is completely safe for the system, with excellent corrosion test results on stainless steel, aluminum, zinc, and copper.
